With all the different types of exercises out there, and all the hype that comes with it, it’s a work-out just making a decision. Different strokes for different folks, I always say.
If you like to get your heart rate going then aerobic exercises will be good for you. If you like to learn a skill then perhaps you should consider martial arts. If you like to flex your muscles and look at yourself in the mirror, then perhaps try weight lifting in the gym. Do what makes you happy, find what inspires you, as long as you get off the couch 🙂
I love yoga because it gives me all of the above. Faster yoga styles such as vinyasa will get your heart rate going. Yoga also builds a lot of strength, but that’s not all…
A comparative study published in 2010 in the “Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine,” researchers found yoga was “as effective as or superior to exercise on nearly every outcome measured.” This includes better sleep, higher attention span, relief from symptoms of mental illness and menopause, increase immune system, cancer reducing, better sex, the list of benefits goes on and on.
Yoga is not only the practice of postures (asanas), it is also the practice of quieting the mind. Yoga is a moving meditation. The breathing techniques used in yoga is extremely beneficial. According to both ancient yogic tradition and modern science, deep breathing can be effective in reducing stress and tension. It is also an essential tool in detoxification, eliminating carbon dioxide and stimulating lymphatic drainage, thereby clearing the body of metabolic waste products stored in our tissue.
